Building permits also declined, continuing a trend of slight cooling in new construction momentum.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"515\" data-end=\"779\">As usual, the market focuses most on <strong data-start=\"552\" data-end=\"572\">building permits<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"577\" data-end=\"595\">housing starts<\/strong>, with the latter representing the beginning of actual construction activity. Total starts fell nearly 10% to an annual pace of <strong data-start=\"723\" data-end=\"740\">1.256 million<\/strong>, down from <strong data-start=\"752\" data-end=\"769\">1.392 million<\/strong> in April.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"515\" data-end=\"779\"><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"781\" data-end=\"1013\">The decline was almost entirely due to a sharp drop in <strong data-start=\"836\" data-end=\"858\">multifamily starts<\/strong>, which fell from <strong data-start=\"876\" data-end=\"884\">420k<\/strong> to <strong data-start=\"888\" data-end=\"896\">316k<\/strong>, the lowest level in over a year. In contrast, <strong data-start=\"944\" data-end=\"986\">single-family starts edged up slightly<\/strong> to <strong data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"998\">924k<\/strong> from <strong data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1012\">920k<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"781\" data-end=\"1013\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a.mortgagenewsdaily.com\/assets\/6855a4f2135f848fce323b7c\/6855a4f2135f848fce323b7c.png\" width=\"525\" height=\"477\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1015\" data-end=\"1240\">Building permits\u2014a forward-looking indicator\u2014also declined, dropping 2% from <strong data-start=\"1092\" data-end=\"1109\">1.422 million<\/strong> to <strong data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1130\">1.393 million<\/strong>.
