September 7, 2024Stellantis is recalling more than 1.2 million Ram pickup trucks in the U.S. to fix a software issue that can disable the electronic stability control system.
The recall affects certain 2029 and 2021 through 2025 Ram 1500 trucks. The recall also affects more than 233,161 vehicles in Canada, Mexico and certain markets outside North America.
The automaker said in a statement Saturday that the trucks may be equipped with anti-lock braking software that could inadvertently disable stability control, which controls the accelerator and brakes to prevent skidding.
If that happens, the brakes still work, Stellantis says.
The company says there have been no reports of accidents or injuries as a result of the issue.
Under U.S. safety standards, electronic stability control must operate during virtually all phases of driving, the company said.
Dealers will update the software to fix the problem at no cost to owners, who will be notified by letter from October 3.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also announced Saturday that Stellantis is recalling 32,863 Jeep Gladiator vehicles produced between 2020 and 2024. The company is also recalling Jeep Wrangler vehicles produced between 2018 and 2024 because the instrument cluster in the vehicles may have an internal short circuit, it said. Reuters.
This is the latest in a series of recalls for Stellantis this year.
In March Stellantis also came recalled Thousands of Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 vehicles were recalled due to a manufacturing defect that could have caused airbags to rupture, sending metal fragments through the cabin. In February, the company recalled more than 338,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees due to a problem with their ball joints that could cause drivers to lose control, potentially resulting in a crash.
In July, Stellanis 332,000 Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Jeep recalled vehicles because sensors on their seat belt connectors are not working properly. The company said at the time that it had received at least 578 reports of the faulty sensor, but is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem.
A month earlier, the carmaker had almost 1.2 million vehicles in North America to fix a software bug that can disable rearview cameras. The recall covers Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Ram pickup trucks and SUVs.
